I'm saying I'm not going to donate, and I explained my reasons why. How dare they try to recoup some of the costs involved in getting the licensing together and manufacturing some items for anyone who wants it. they did work on a product and offered to let you use/have that product in exchange for money. I mean, I appreciate that they're working out a deal with Ubisoft, but a kickstarter? That seems like a way to just take my money.

Not donating to this kickstarter, because all the Myst games already work on Windows 10, with a few tweaks that can easily be packaged into a GOG installer. Myst III is best played in ResidualVM anyway but having a natively fixed (and digitally distributed) version will be nice. It works but it's a crap shoot and requires fiddling.

Instead of paying up front and hopefully recouping later they can also pay for the production with money they've already gotten. Unlike truly small and limited editions they can also make sure that literally everyone who wants one of these packages gets one of them. If your estimate is way off the mark you've just wasted money producing something.īy making this a Kickstarter they can make sure that they only actually produce say 10 of those pen+bug packages, because only 10 people went for that tier. You then have to actually produce all these limited edition things. If you make a traditional pre-order product you'll have to estimate how many people might legitimately be interested in buying the product at a premium and get some extra stuff. I really enjoyed the Myst games back in the day, so maybe they do deserved - it's not outrageous kind of money - some European football stars get that much for a week's worth of kicking balls. In this case it seems like a get rich quick scheme from ageing rock start who don't want to work too hard to get another quarter of a million.
It's both good and bad - 'artistic' endeavour means that priorities change and sticking to artificial deadlines is not great, so I like the kickstarter model as it gives artists more freedom. Maybe I'm missing something, can someone explain to me?
And, unlike most preorder activities from established entities, they aren't really even trying to gauge interest in a product - these are just limited editions and that's the end of it. While Kickstarter has shifted to a "preorder but we deliver whenever we feel like it" site instead of non-equity seed money, it sounds like they are going ahead with all of this regardless. I'm not sure I understand why this is a Kickstarter product instead of just going through a traditional sales/preorder model.
